New Delhi: NewsClick editor Prabir Purkayastha and the news portal’s HR head Amit Chakravarti were remanded to nine days of police custody by a Delhi court on Wednesday, October 25.
According to Bar and Bench, additional sessions judge Hardeep Kaur of the Patiala house courts asked the Delhi police, who have arrested the duo under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act [UAPA], to produce them before the court on November 2.
Purkayastha and Chakravarti were arrested by the Delhi police on October 3, when the houses of nearly 50 persons associated with NewsClick were raided. They were remanded to seven days of police custody initially and have been in judicial custody since October 20.
The Delhi Police sought their custody in court on Wednesday to “confront them with protected witnesses and electronic material recovered”, according to Bar and Bench.
Advocate Arshdeep Singh Khurana, for Purkayastha, said that the test for a second remand is much higher and the police need to show what new discoveries they have made or need to make.
The FIR accuses NewsClick of receiving foreign funds from China to criticise the Indian government’s policies and promote Chinese propaganda. Purkayastha and Chakravarty have denied the allegations.
