New Delhi: A UK-based computer science professor of Indian origin has been booked for allegedly provoking communities in strife-torn Manipur through his social media posts. Ethnic violence has continued in Manipur since more than a year.

The FIR against professor Uday Reddy of the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom (UK) was registered at Imphal police station by a local resident. His X handle @Kautilya33 has also been “withheld in response to a legal demand”, reported The Times of India.

The Delhi chapter of the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) has condemned the FIR against Reddy. The KSO issued a statement on Monday, saying that the police action “represents a disturbing trend where individuals and organisations exposing the malpractices of the Biren Singh led-Manipur government are unjustly targeted,” reported NDTV.

According to the FIR filed by a resident in Imphal, Reddy has been working online to create tension between communities on religious grounds in Manipur through his online messages and talk sessions on a social media platform.

The KSO has demanded the withdrawal of the FIR against Reddy and end action against individuals who are bringing in light the historical and present-day realities of Manipur.

“It is clear that professor Reddy, an Indian-loving person of Indian origin with deep connections to India and its people, is being targeted for his commitment to truth and justice. The professor’s activism on social media has never been about vilifying the Meitei community. Rather, it has been about shedding light on the complex truths surrounding the Manipur violence,” the KSO said in its statement, reported The Times of India.
