Migrant Workers Killed in Pune Accident: Speeding Truck Driven by Drunk Driver Claims 3 Lives

The police reported that the victims were migrant workers from rural areas of Amravati and Wardha districts, working in Pune as daily wage labourers at construction sites and other small jobs.

New Delhi: In a tragic incident, a speeding truck driven by a drunk driver plowed into a group of migrant workers sleeping on a footpath in Wagholi area of Pune in the early hours on Monday (December 23), killing three people, including two toddlers, and injuring six others.

According to senior police inspector Pandit Rejitwad, the accident happened around 1 am when the victims were fast asleep. A dumper truck, traveling at high speed, veered off the road and crashed onto the footpath, striking a group of 12 people.

The police reported that the victims were migrant workers from rural areas of Amravati and Wardha districts, working in Pune as daily wage labourers at construction sites and other small jobs.

The deceased were identified as Vishal Vinod Pawar, 22, Vaibhav Ritesh Pawar, 2, and Vaibhavi Ritesh Pawar, 1, all from Amravati. Those injured include Janaki Dinesh Pawar, 21, Rinisha Vinod Pawar, 18, Roshan Bhosale, 9, Nagesh Nivrutti Pawar, 27, Darshan Sanjay Vairal, 18, and Alisha Vinod Pawar, 47, The Indian Express reported.

Following the incident, Virendra Paramdasji Bhosale, a labourer from Karanja Ghadge in Wardha district, filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Wagholi police station.

The driver, Gajanan Shankar Totre, 26, was arrested after his medical test confirmed he was driving under the influence of alcohol. Totre has been charged under sections 105, 281, 125 (a), and 125 (b) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act.
