New Delhi: Lieutenant general Upendra Dwivedi, who is currently vice chief of army staff, will serve as chief of army staff starting June 30 when the incumbent chief, general Manoj Pande, will demit office, the government announced on Tuesday (June 11).

According to a handout issued by the Press Information Bureau, lieutenant general Dwivedi has previously held the posts of director general infantry and general officer commanding in chief of the northern command headquarter.

He attended the Sainik School Rewa, the National Defence Academy and the US Army War College. He has received the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.

General Pande, the current chief of army staff, was to remit office on May 31 but in an unusual move, the government extended his term by one month.

Army chiefs serve a term of three years or until they turn 62 years of age, whichever comes sooner. General Pande turned 62 on May 6 and hence was meant to retire at the end of the same month.
