Truth be told, Kamala Harris’s rise to political prominence is less a symbol of progress and more a case of tokenism – an attempt to placate calls for diversity and inclusion without challenging the underlying structures that maintain white supremacy.

The far-right capitalised on the anger, resentment, and imagination fuelled by farmers’ protests across Europe, particularly in Germany, France, and the Netherlands. They positioned themselves as the alternative option to push against the perceived new enemy — the Greens.

The non-populists, instead of writing an obituary about populism, should focus on understanding why populists are on the march. They should go to the people, have the courage to take bold actions. Importantly, they should invest in actions that would rebuild people’s trust in democracy.

In times of digital transformation, misinformation and troops of favourable video editors can sway voters and construct imagery of leaders and parties far removed from truth.

In both Europe and India, far-right parties exhibit a common pattern of lacking a concrete plan to address the fundamental issues confronting farmers. Instead, they resort to a propaganda-driven approach to manipulate public opinion and perpetuate their hold on power.

Pakistan needs dynamic young leaders who can bring renewed energy, innovation, and a contemporary perspective to address the evolving challenges.

As the far-right propagates a simplified and emotionally resonant message, the lack of coordination and a shared vision among the “non-far-right” strengthens the far-right's illusion of representing the entirety of “the people”.
